CSIP Guidelines

Guidelines have been prepared for people in the industry who will be affected by the program.

  • Producers
  • Feedlot Operators
  • Packing Plants
  • Livestock Dealers and Auction Marts
  • Truckers

      Guidelines for Producers

All sheep and lambs must bear an approved CSIP ear tag before they leave any premises.

This includes animals leaving the premises temporarily (e.g. exhibitions, veterinarian clinics, community pastures).

It is illegal to transport untagged animals.

      Sheep producers are required to:

      • Ensure that an approved CSIP ear tag is applied to all sheep and lambs before they leave your farm.
      • Keep a record of:
      • Imported sheep must have a Canadian-approved national identification tag applied within seven days of arrival.
      • All animals purchased must bear an approved CSIP ear tag. If a tag is subsequently lost, you must immediately apply a new approved CSIP ear tag and record the identification number with as much information about the origin of the animal as is known.
      • Approved CSIP ear tags must not be removed from any live animal or tampered with for any reason and must not be re-used. If an animal dies on your property, the tag should be removed, saved and recorded with the cause of death if known.
      • Tags must be purchased from an approved distributor. When purchasing tags, you will be asked to provide your name, telephone number and address.

      Guidelines for Feedlot Operators

All sheep and lambs must bear an approved CSIP ear tag before they leave any premises.

This includes animals leaving the premises temporarily (e.g. exhibitions, veterinarian clinics, community pastures).

It is illegal to transport untagged animals.

      Feedlot Operators are required to:

      • Acquire only sheep that bear an approved CSIP ear tag applied by the farm of origin.
      • If a tag is subsequently lost, you must immediately apply a new approved CSIP ear tag and record the new identification number with as much information about the origin of the animal as is known.
      • Apply an approved CSIP ear tag to all sheep and lambs born on your premises before they leave the farm or feedlot.
      • Keep a record of:
      • Imported sheep must have a Canadian-approved national identification tag applied within seven days of arrival.

      Guidelines for Packing Plants

Packing plants that slaughter sheep are required to:

      • Accept only sheep and lambs bearing an approved CSIP ear tag.
      • If you receive an animal that lost its tag in transit, you must maintain a record of any identification number on the animal, the name and address of the person bringing the animal to the abattoir, and adequate information to enable the animal’s origin to be traced.
      • Maintain the animal’s individual identification number with the carcass until the carcass and offal is approved for human consumption or is condemned.
      • Approved CSIP ear tags must not be removed from any live animal or tampered with for any reason and must not be re-used.

Guidelines for Livestock Dealers and Auction Marts

All sheep and lambs must bear an approved CSIP ear tag before they leave any premises.

This includes animals leaving the premises temporarily (e.g. exhibitions, veterinarian clinics, community pastures).

Livestock dealers and auction marts are required to:

      • Accept only sheep that bear an approved CSIP ear tag applied by the farm of origin.
      • If a lamb or sheep has lost a tag in transit, keep a record of the origin and subsequent destination of the animal (date, name and address of source, date of departure, name and address of person who removed the animal).
      • You may choose to apply a new tag. Tags must be purchased from an approved distributor. When purchasing tags, you will be asked to provide your name, address and phone number.
      • Approved CSIP ear tags must not be removed from any live animal or tampered with for any reason and must not be re-used. If an animal dies on your property, the tag should be removed and recorded with the cause of death if known.
