Sheep Health and Welfare

At the Canadian Sheep Federation (CSF), the health and welfare of Canadian sheep is a top priority. We work closely with industry stakeholders, veterinarians, researchers, and regulatory partners to ensure that animal care standards are grounded in science, practicality, and continuous improvement.

Updating the Code of Practice for Sheep

CSF is proud to lead the process of updating the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Sheep. This Code provides producers with defensible, science-informed best practices that reflect current understanding of animal welfare and public expectations. The Code is also a foundational component of assurance programs, such as the Canadian Verified Sheep Program (CVSP) and other industry-led initiatives.

The update process is being managed by the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) and involves:

  • A scientific committee conducting a comprehensive literature review

  • A code development committee representing producers, veterinarians, transporters, processors, and animal welfare organizations

  • Opportunities for public comment to ensure transparency and accountability

We recognize that Canada’s sheep producers are committed to continuous improvement in animal care, and the Code update reflects our shared goal of practical, achievable, and evidence-based standards.

Our Broader Welfare Commitments

Beyond the Code, CSF engages in national initiatives related to:

  • Animal health surveillance

  • Disease response planning

  • Producer education on welfare and biosecurity best practices

  • Advancing the role of guardian animals and flock management tools

We believe that responsible care is essential not only to the well-being of animals, but also to the trust and sustainability of the entire Canadian sheep industry.
