Traceability: Building Trust Through Innovation
Traceability: Building Trust Through Innovation
At the Canadian Sheep Federation, we see traceability not just as a regulatory requirement—but as a powerful enabler of animal health, food safety, market access, and producer confidence.
As industry needs evolve, we’re modernizing traceability systems to reflect the real-world workflows of Canadian sheep producers. Our goal is to provide practical, intuitive tools that support on-farm decision-making while meeting national and international expectations for transparency and responsiveness.
Advancing Digital Solutions
To meet these goals, we’re developing and testing next-generation tools that integrate seamlessly into day-to-day operations. At the centre of this work is AgroLedger, a secure, blockchain-backed platform that supports livestock movement reporting, treatment records, and system-to-system data sharing.
AgroLedger is designed to:
-
Improve data integrity and reduce duplication
-
Enable real-time access to essential flock and movement information
-
Align with regulatory requirements while reducing paperwork burdens
We’re also exploring additional technologies—including biometric animal identification and AI-enabled health monitoring—that have the potential to further strengthen traceability, biosecurity, and sustainability outcomes.
Supporting Producers, Informing Policy
CSF’s traceability leadership also extends into national programming and policy. Our traceability systems are foundational to initiatives such as:
-
The Canadian Sheep Identification Program (CSIP)
-
The Canadian Verified Sheep Program (CVSP)
-
Emergency disease response and border-readiness efforts
-
Sustainability and GHG tracking frameworks
We are working with government partners, regulators, and supply chain stakeholders to ensure traceability is not only technically sound, but also producer-friendly and fit for the future.
Our Commitment
We are committed to building a traceability system that works for everyone—producers, consumers, regulators, and markets. One that protects our animals, strengthens public trust, and ensures Canada’s sheep industry is equipped to thrive in a data-driven world.
